FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about our pricing, licenses, and usage.
What does the ray count mean?
The ray count represents the computational resources available for your simulations. Each ray is a light path traced through your model. More complex models require more rays for accurate results. A typical simulation uses 500 million rays, so 1 billion rays is sufficient for most users.
Is there a free trial available?
Yes, we offer a fully supported one month free trial program for new users to thoroughly test SunSolve before committing to a subscription. Contact our team to get started.
Do you offer academic or research pricing?
Yes, we offer discounted pricing for academic and research institutions on long-term research projects. Please contact our sales team to discuss your needs and we'll put together a package that works for your institution.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept most major credit cards, wire transfers, and purchase orders from institutions and businesses.
What happens if I reach my fair usage limit?
Once you reach your fair usage limit, simulations are paused until your next billing period begins or you upgrade to a higher plan.
Startup, Solo & Professional — your ray allocation is fixed for the billing period. Once it's used, you'll need to wait for the next period or upgrade your plan.
Enterprise — can purchase additional rays on demand. Contact our sales team to top up.
Loyalty bonus: Some plans reward long-term subscribers with increased allocations upon renewal, so your capacity grows over time. Once your allocation for the period is fully used, you'll need to wait for the next period or upgrade.
What are the benefits of renewing?
Renewing rewards loyalty through usage rollover: unused rays carry forward on annual plans, building a growing asset the longer you stay.
Enterprise customers also accumulate priority upgrade days (8 days/yr, cap 16 days) — banked engineering time you can draw on for custom work.
All banked benefits are forfeited if the subscription lapses.
How does the Startup plan work?
The Startup plan is a pay-as-you-go monthly option at $499/month with a one-time $2,000 setup fee, available to companies with fewer than 20 employees.
Fair usage: 100 million rays per month, no rollover between months.
Support: Essential (basic email for software usage and installation).
Billing: Credit card.
The Startup plan can be used for commercial work — it is simply limited by the monthly ray limit and single-user license.
What is the Solo plan?
The Solo plan is an annual single-user commercial license at $8K/year with a one-time $4K setup fee.
It includes essential support and 1 billion rays per year. Solo is designed for individual users who need a dedicated commercial license but don't need the team features or advanced support of Professional.
Upgrade credit: If you upgrade to Professional within 12 months of your Solo start date, your $4K setup fee is fully credited toward the first year. After 12 months, the credit expires.
Can I upgrade my plan later?
Yes, you can upgrade at any time.
Proration: The price difference is prorated for the remaining subscription period, but only if you have both time and fair usage allocation remaining. If your fair usage limit has been completely consumed, no credit is available.
Solo → Professional: If you upgrade within 12 months of your Solo start date, your setup fee is fully credited toward the first year of Professional.
What happens if I downgrade my plan?
Downgrading forfeits all accumulated retention benefits, including banked fair usage allocation and priority upgrade days (Enterprise).
Your new subscription starts fresh at Year 1 terms with the allocations of the lower tier. Any setup fees applicable to the lower tier are payable upon downgrade.
If you are considering a downgrade due to budget constraints, please contact our sales team — we may be able to offer an alternative that preserves your accumulated benefits.
FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about our pricing, licenses, and usage.
What does the module year allocation mean?
Module years measure the scale of your energy yield simulations. The number of module years for a simulation is calculated by multiplying the number of Simple Modules in the Unit System Block by the number of Simulation Years being simulated. For example, a system with 100 simple modules simulated over 1 year uses 100 module years. See the 'How are Module Years calculated?' FAQ below for full details including Full Module equivalents.

How are Module Years calculated?
Module Years = Simple Modules in Unit System Block × Simulation Years
Simple Modules are loaded from PAN files, which represent cells using an Incidence Angle Modifier (IAM). These are typically used when forecasting utility-scale yield.
Unit System Block — the central repeating section of the system, shown as the white rectangular prism in the SunSolve interface. Electrical results for larger systems may be calculated by multiplying the Unit System Block results.
Simulation Year — 365 days calculated hourly (365 × 24 = 8,760 time steps). If a simulation uses a different number of time steps, divide by 8,760 and round up to the nearest whole number.
Full Modules contain a detailed model of the module — all materials in the cell and module stack, cell spacing, texture, and electrode dimensions. These are typically used for cell and module research. Full Modules count as ten times the Module Years of Simple Modules.
